| Beginning the process – What do we do for you? Our business is product design and development from initial idea to manufacture. Cube3 can design new products, rejuvenate current products and reduce costs through better design. When you contact us you are starting a relationship with a product design consultancy, which can take your initial concept, opportunity or problem from initial thoughts, through a research and analysis phase, then followed by elaboration and refining work by our team and then development to add manufacturing detail to the product. Alongside producing necessary manufacturing detail, we can also provide high quality models and graphics to help in marketing or to show potential investors. Then Cube3 can also do your product prototyping and all manufacturing, or work with you to smoothly begin manufacturing at your own site or your selected contract supplier. Among the companies we have worked with we mention two here. Blue-i UK Ltd who were determined to use LED's in a high intensity portable lighting product, we designed it for them, the I-Storm24. Cube3 also designed and prototyped the TX range of bowls measures for Taylor Bowls. The company is committed to promoting the game to a younger audience. The Bowls Measure funky new design reflects this modern image and since its launch, their sales have improved significantly. Research and Analysis We aim to give the very best of product design UK and always available to consult with you, so we know that meeting the needs of end users is central to a products' success. We meet end users needs successfully by using a number of methods. One of which is exploring your knowledge of the market, you know your customers wants and needs, our product designers just need to extract the gist of the relevant information! A second method is by conducting pure research, where we use the web, product directories, industry contacts and many other useful sources for information. Of course talking to potential customers is invaluable at this stage, we arrange to talk to both them and you, by telephone, face to face, or by video conference to understand, interpret and elaborate their real needs. Incidentally when we meet we might also bring some relevant products from our extensive current portfolio, of which we are of course very proud, for you to see. Last but by no means least, we research by looking at other competing or related products which we look at in order to judge their strengths and weaknesses. Most of all we listen to you, your stakeholders, and the market. We are not alone in doing all this among product design companies, but we are told by our customers and the marketplace in general that we do it very well indeed. Product designers Our product design team will work with you to evolve and refine the best product concept for your needs. This is what we call the ideas and concepts part of the project, it is the stage of product development that allows us to explore new ideas, invent intriguing mechanisms, create new looks, think out of the box about problems and look to re-invigorate existing products. As an illustrative example of work we do in this area consider Target Sports. They are the largest manufacturers of darts in the world and they are based right here in the UK. They approached us to design new and innovative packaging for their new range of own-branded darts. A number of our packaging concepts were presented as sketches and one of these one was taken through to final design. We worked closely with Target trying to achieve a unique packaging solution that was subtly British without shouting it from the rooftops. There were also a number of matching accessories designed alongside the packaging which included a quality leather darts wallet. As you might imagine this is always the entertaining part of any new product design, the part in which the ideas which came from the research are distilled or translated into a range of visual concepts in a sketch, either by hand or as CAD generated images. This set of product design graphics will provide you and your potential customers the first complete glimpse of where the project is going and, subject to approval; can then be refined in the next step in the process. Remember that this is an intuitive process and as a result we may have to go around a few times to get the solution that really fits, and then we can go to the next stage, the design and development of the product. Product design development Further ahead now and it is all coming together. At this stage of the project we consolidate and expand on what has gone before, by using our 3 dimensional CAD product design packages to add detail to the product. Our engineers will consider the mechanical, physical and dynamic needs of the product to complete a mechanical design. Then we research and evaluate the best possible manufacturing methods and materials to make the new designed products cost effectively, yet we still concentrate on great look and feel. A good example of our recent work in this area is the work we did for the Toyota F1 team from Germany who gave us the brief "We want a lightweight portable table in a briefcase that will hold two laptops and a battery pack.” The ‘Grid Stand’, as it is called, was constructed using a lot of carbon fibre and cross drilled anodised aluminium, it was designed, prototyped, evaluated, accepted by the customer and manufactured by us here in just three short months. It is our experience in these areas over many years that enables us to do all this swiftly and expertly. The CAD images developed in this part of the process can of course be used to generate CNC machine instructions which leads the product swiftly and easily to manufacture. The advantage is of course swift to manufacture means swift to market and swift to sale. Do please be aware that we can and do develop concepts that have been created by others. Design for Manufacture Designing for manufacture, now we very nearly have a final completed and hopefully wonderful product. As an example of work in this area Cube3 have been the mechanical design team behind Walters Microsystems for the last 6 years. Through this partnership, we have designed successful products for prestigious companies including the new RoadAngel 2, RoadAngel Compact, and a range of GPS based golf accessories for GolfPlus. At this phase of product design work we take developed designs and we add all the final manufacturing detail as needed. This will be, amongst others, in the areas of tolerance checking, allowances for moulding, allowances for casting, final refinement of the design for specific issues and confirming fit, finish, colour etc. There is an opportunity at this stage to tweak the design by considering costs and practicalities of the build process, our expertise used judiciously here can improve the bottom line and the customer reaction very considerably. Materials selection is also very important; we have many years of experience and good supplier connection to help here. Of course our experienced engineering designers will be very much involved in all parts of this stage of the project and their input will be invaluable. The product design engineering at this stage also encompasses providing, to you, all manufacturing information to whatever scale or level that is required by you. We can of course produce complete high standard drawing packs if that's what you want and, naturally, we can provide quality CAD output in all standard formats for you and your suppliers to use. Now we go on to the next, most rewarding phase of all which provides a model or prototype for you to examine in detail and really check that we are all on the same wavelength. Let's go to it! Models and Prototypes During this phase you get a tangible product prototype to examine, and enjoy. Innovative product design is essentially an iterative process, where new ideas become practical solutions with pleasing forms. During this process it is essential to get tactile user interaction and feedback from potential users. Rapid prototyping is the method we use to produce working models quickly and easily. We have a rapid prototyping capability within our production and warehousing area where we assemble a range of products that we've designed for our clients over the years. The benefits of doing things this way are very apparent because nothing equals seeing and handling that wonderful new product, and of course a prototype confirms satisfactory operation of the product before committing expensively to manufacturing. Whilst basic unfinished models are usually used as a matter of course in any creative product design process sometimes more is needed. If that is the case then we can also produce high quality models as you require again swiftly on-site.
